Governance

Huron was established by an Act of the Province of Canada in 1863 and continued by The Huron College Act, 1958 (amended in 1961 and 1975).

It is currently governed by The Huron University College Act, 2020. An Academic Council is responsible for all matters relating to the academic life of the institution.

Huron is an independent, degree-granting institution, which has been affiliated with Western University since the late nineteenth century. Apart from honorary degrees in divinity, its degree-granting authority is currently held in abeyance, under the terms of our Affiliation Agreement with Western University. The President of Huron is an ex-officio member of the Western Senate.

Call For Nominations

Each year, Huron aims to confer honorary degrees in divinity at its Spring Theology Convocation and at its Spring FASS Convocation. The Doctor of Divinity degrees are awarded to individuals who exemplify the mission of Huron, based on the following criteria:

(a)        Doctor of Divinity jure dignitatis, given in recognition to persons in Episcopal Office who are graduates of the College; and perhaps selectively to others such as graduates of the College currently serving as Deans of Cathedrals, National and Diocesan Office personnel, significant positions in the church or another faith community and not restricted to Anglicans only;

(b)        Doctor of Divinity honoris causa, is given in recognition to persons who have made significant contributions, directly or indirectly, to the betterment of the life of the University, the local community, and society in general in the province, Canada, or the world. These areas of achievement include academic, scientist, artist, educator, administrator, or public servant, or in any other recognized way.

If you would like to nominate an individual(s) for this award, please return the nomination form to Anne Turvey at aturvey3@huron.uwo.ca, by Monday, November 1, 2021.
